Medicare can be confusing. We’re here to help break it all down so you can make smarter decisions, such as with the Medicare Supplement Comparison Chart below. We can help you research and enroll in a plan that best fits your unique situation, so you can make the most of your newfound retirement freedom.
Medicare Supplement and Medigap are different names for the same thing. Medicare Supplement plans fill the gaps left by Original Medicare (Parts A and B). You have to enroll in Medicare part A and B before you enroll in aMedicare Supplement plan. We can advise you on that, too, if you like.
It’s important to be clear that Medicare Parts A and B (together often calledOriginal Medicare) and Part C (Medicare Advantage) are different than Medicare Supplement Plans A through N.
-
Original Medicare Parts A (hospital coverage) and B (medical services/doctor coverage) are direct government-sponsored Medicare programs.
-
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) is issued by private insurance companies and replaces Original Medicare, sometimes with additional benefits.
-
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are standardized. This means that all plans named A through N have the same benefits no matter which private insurance company provides them. A Medicare Supplement plan (Medigap) is layered on top of Original Medicare.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Comparison Chart
The chart below contrasts the benefits offered by each of the 10 Medicare Supplement/Medigap plans available in 2022.
Yes = the plan covers 100% of this benefit
No = the policy doesn’t cover that benefit
% = the plan covers a specific percentage of this benefit
N/A = not applicable
* Plans F and G also offer a high-deductible plan in some states. With this option, you must pay for Medicare-covered costs (coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles) up to the deductible amount of $2,490 in 2022 before your policy pays anything. (Plans C and F aren’t available to people who were newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.)
** For Plans K and L, after you meet your out-of-pocket yearly limit and your yearly Part B deductible, the Medigap plan pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the calendar year.
*** Plan N pays 100% of the Part B coinsurance, except for a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don’t result in inpatient admission.
No = the policy doesn’t cover that benefit
% = the plan covers a specific percentage of this benefit
